The Federal College Work-Study Program was established by Congress to aid U.S. citizens and permanent residents who need to work in order to meet educational expenses. Eligibility for this program depends on financial need as determined by FAFSA results. Federal regulations restrict employment in this program to 20 hours a week during the academic year. Students may work up to 35 hours per week during the summer and vacation periods.
Other highlights of Work Study programs include:
- Available to both undergraduate and graduate students.
- Program seeks to encourage student's participation in community service and enhancement of studies through related work activities.
- Work-Study award will be determined by the student's financial need, when the student applies, and the funds that the school has available to allocate.
- The amount of the Work-Study Award cannot be exceeded by the amount the student earns through the Program.
- Student will either be employed by his/her school, a nonprofit organization, or a public agency.
